Maha Shivratri Why And How Do Hindus Celebrate The Religious Festival In India And Nepal

Hindu devotees offer prayers to a Shiva Lingam, a stone sculpture representing the phallus of Hindu god Lord Shiva, to mark the Maha Shivratri festival.

Maha Shivratri is an auspicious Hindu festival that is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The celebration falls on the 13th night and 14th day of the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna or Maagh every year and in 2016 it is being observed on the evening of 7 March.

Many Hindus believe that those who worship Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri would be cleansed of all their sins, making it one of the most important festivals for the Hindu religion. Maha Shivratri is also said to be the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married, bringing together two of the greatest forces in the universe, with Lord Shiva being known as the destroyer of the Universe, paving the way for beneficial change.

Who is Lord Shiva?

He is one of three Hindu gods who are responsible for the creation, upkeep and destruction of the universe, making him an extremely significant and important God in Hinduism. Lord Shivas role was to destroy the universe in order to recreate it, with the destruction being viewed by Hindus as a positive and constructive thing that paves the way for ridding the world of imperfections.

As destroyer of the universe, Lord Shiva was known to have an untamed behaviour. He was only calmed by his wife Goddess Parvati, who would bring balance to his life and turn him into a lover. This is the reason why the day of their union is celebrated so widely among Hindus.

Lord Shiva is also believed to be the God of Yoga and is often portrayed in a yoga position.

What is the significance of the day for women?

Maha Shivratri is also an extremely significant day for Hindu women, who perform a hunger fast during the day to appease Lord Shivas wife, Goddess Parvati. Parvati is the mother goddess in Hinduism and represents the goddess of love, fertility and devotion. Parvati is believed to be the goddess that blesses women with marital bliss and long and prosperous married life.She is also thought to represent divine strength and her relationship with Lord Shiva is one of equality, with Parvati always represented by the Gods side.

What are the prayer ceremonies associated with Maha Shivratri?

Lord Shiva is often represented by the Shiva ling, a statue that represents the power of Shiva and his masculinity. Hindus believe that the Shiva ling represents the seed of the universe and on Maha Shivratri the Shiva ling is bathed in water, milk and honey as it is worshipped. Beautiful flowers are also placed around the statue.

The famous prayer ceremony conducted on this day is the Maha Rudra Abhishek, which is performed to gain the blessing of Lord Shiva. The puja is said to worship Lord Shiva in his "rudra" form, or "benevolent" form. It is said that the Maha Rudra Abhishek is hailed by all Vedic scriptures as one of the greatest pujas to perform in order to remove all evil and attain prosperity. Believers say that when you pray to Lord Shiva every negative form of energy that surrounds you is transformed into peace and joy.

Microsoft Windows 7 Free Codec Download to view RAW camera files or Do you Shoot RAW

I have to admit I was a bit surprised at such forward thinking at Microsoft, but they have released codecs, which are essentially drivers or software to be able to view RAW camera files in Windows Explorer and Windows Live Photo Gallery.

RAW format is really taking off, and for serious photographers, it is the way to go. This format is generally only available in the more advanced cameras such as DSLRs and higher end point and shoots.

What is the difference between RAW and a .JPG file?

When you take a photo with a digital camera, and save it as a .jpg in the camera, the camera and it’s electronics make assumptions about the photo and make a bunch of exposure and other important decisions about the photo when saved.

With a RAW file, it is almost like going back to the scene and able to retake the photo. You have a lot more control over exposure and thus your lighting and photos can look much better.

I won’t get too technical, but a .jpg file is an 8 bit file which will store about 256 levels of brightness in your photo.

A RAW file is usually a 12 bit size file which can handle about 4,096 levels of brightness for each and every pixel. It does vary by manufacturer and camera model.

So if I have a choice of 256 brightness levels, or 4096, I would take the bigger one any day. What that does is give you a much larger latitude of exposure to work with.

Ever have a photo where the sky is just all washed out, or the shade under the tree is too dark? More exposure levels is what allows you to pull out detail in those areas you would not be able to with only 256 levels.

Disadvantages?

There are a few things to consider and they are not necessarily disadvantages with shooting photos in RAW.

They do take up a lot of space, the RAW file sizes can be around 25 megabytes vs. around 3 mb for the same photo saved in .jpg.

Also, you do need to process the files a bit differently with software that will edit the RAW files. JPG files are pretty much ready to go unless they need some minor adjusting.

Different Formats for brands of Cameras

The one big problem is there are a lot of RAW formats out there. Each camera manufacturer can have their own, Canon uses .CR2 and Nikon uses .NEF, and there are a bunch more.

The nice thing about the ability to view RAW files is that without the codecs, you just see a blank document in thumbnail view. But the the codecs, the RAW files act just like a .jpg or other photo. You can see the little thumbnail, and you can click on it, and see the RAW file in the file preview window. You can enlarge the view, just like all other image files.

The codecs work in Windows 7 or Vista with Service Pack 2 installed. Just download, and install, quick and easy. Then go into your Pictures folder where you have some RAW files, and check it out.

If you have a camera capable of shooting RAW, many times you can set it to shoot a .jpg and RAW photo at the same time. This way you can make sure you have a .jpg like you are used to. In addition, you will get a RAW file that you can start to learn how to edit. The main thing you can do with RAW is exposure type changes.

Man rips out his eyeballs after ‘voices’ tell him to do it

During Sunday Mass in Viareggio, Italy a churchgoer pulled out his own eyes with his hands before collapsing in a pool of blood. The British born man, known as 46 year old Aldo Bianchini, apparently stood up and then quite calmly pulled out his eyes in front of horrified parishners. His mothered tried to help him whilst the priest called for help, however when the man reached hospital in nearby Versilia, surgeons were unable to save his sight.

The man told doctors in Viareggio, Italy, he “heard voices” telling him to rip out his eyes. He has now been admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where he is receiving treatment. According to medics, Aldo had been in treatment for a psychiatric illness however he had not wanted to take the pills prescribed to him.
After the events had unfolded Priest Lorenzo Tanganelli, did manage to carry on with the Sunday Mass, he said of the events: “I’ve never seen so much blood. In the Bible, Jesus says: “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
The doctor who treated Also said the man did not complain or show any signal of physical pain, and answered correctly when asked his name. He said: “In the 26 years I have been practising, I have never seen anything like it. He would have needed absolutely super-human strength to pull his own eyes out with his hands.”
The poor man’s mother who had tried to comfort her son said: “He got up and started banging his head against the floor, he was covered in blood – I did not know what was happening, he didn’t say anything.”
